Question by nathan_alexanders_mommy: Can a sex offender ever live a normal life?

I have a friend whom was 18 and accused of attempting to force at 16 year old girl to have sex with him. He got charged and did about a year in jail. He had to register on megans law. I am pretty positive that he didn't do anything. The girl yelled rape.. and they ended up only charging him with attempted rape. Will he ever be able to live a normal life? He is so young he has his whole life in front of him.

I would usually say no since their actions have stigmatised them in the eyes of society. However if your friend never actually did anything it does seem unfair that he shouldn't be allowed to lead a normal life.

Furthermore, considering the charge of rape has unclear boundaries under law I'm surprised he could have been convicted by something even less clearly defined. How was the burden of proof achieved? It seems illogical that a charge of attempted rape could end in conviction when there is no evidence that a rape rather than an assault or other battery would be commited. It's hearsay that convicted him.. ridiculous
